THE KNICK - Digital Matte Painting

THE KNICK (CINEMAX)

WORK DESCRIPTION:

STARNO worked on the gritty and visceral world of early 20th-century New York for the critically acclaimed series THE KNICK, directed by Steven Soderbergh. The work focused on the architectural authenticity of the Knickerbocker Hospital and its surrounding urban environment.

As a Freelance Matte Painter, Frédéric St-Arnaud executed several complex set extensions for the hospital's exterior. The workflow involved using 3D base renders provided by the studio as a geometric foundation. These renders were then meticulously enhanced through Digital Matte Painting to add realistic textures, period-accurate weathering, and atmospheric details over the original live-action plates.

The primary challenge was to maintain the dark, industrial, and somewhat clinical aesthetic of 1900s New York. Every brick, cobblestone, and window detail had to reflect the historical reality of an era where modern medicine was in its infancy, ensuring a seamless blend between the practical sets and the digital extensions.

STORYLINE:

Set in downtown New York in 1900, THE KNICK focuses on the Knickerbocker Hospital and its innovative surgeons, nurses, and staff who push the boundaries of medicine in a time of astonishingly high mortality rates and zero antibiotics.

The series stars Clive Owen as Dr. John Thackery, a brilliant but drug-addicted surgeon who faces the pressure of personal demons while attempting to revolutionize medical procedures. Under the masterful direction of Steven Soderbergh, the show offers a raw, unflinching look at the social and racial tensions of the era, all while maintaining a hauntingly beautiful visual style.
