For the promotional cinematic of Sudden Attack 2, STARNO was commissioned by Squeeze Studio to breathe life into the streets of Seoul. This project stands as a prime example of high-level studio collaboration: while Squeeze focused on the intricate character animation and the hero character, Mia, STARNO took full responsibility for the world-building and environment creation.
The mandate required the creation of ultra-realistic urban settings to ground the cinematic's tense narrative. Our team built the environments using a robust 3D pipeline, which was then enhanced with advanced Digital Matte Painting (DMP) techniques. This hybrid approach allowed us to add an extra layer of gritty realism, atmospheric depth, and lighting complexity, ensuring that the background environments matched the high-fidelity quality of the animated characters.
Sudden Attack 2, the sequel to one of the most popular tactical FPS titles in Asia, features intense urban warfare. The promotional cinematic follows Mia, a fan-favorite character, as she navigates the rain-slicked and dangerous streets of Seoul. Cornered by a squad of soldiers, the environment plays a crucial role in heightening the suspense and cinematic scale of the encounter.
The goal was to portray Seoul not just as a backdrop, but as a living, breathing city under pressure. By blending 3D geometry with matte painting, STARNO was able to deliver the complex reflections, detailed textures, and cinematic lighting required to make the urban chase feel both visceral and hyper-realistic.
