STARNO contributed high-end Digital Matte Painting services to the documentary RAISING POMPEII. This ambitious production utilizes decades of archaeological research to provide a definitive look at what life was truly like for the citizens of Pompeii before the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius.
As a Freelance Matte Painter, STARNO was tasked with the historical reconstruction of a full-scale aerial view of the city. The mission was to transform a modern-day drone plate of the current ruins into a bustling, living Roman metropolis as it appeared before being buried under volcanic ash.
This laborious process required a sophisticated blend of 3D architectural elements and complex digital painting. By building directly over the drone cinematography, we were able to ensure geographical accuracy while restoring the city's villas, temples, and vibrant streets. The result is a seamless "time-travel" effect that bridges the gap between modern archaeology and ancient history.
RAISING POMPEII follows a team of experts as they use cutting-edge technology and newly discovered evidence to reveal the secrets of the world’s most famous volcanic victim. The documentary moves beyond the tragedy to explore the sophisticated engineering, social structures, and daily routines of the people who called this city home.
By combining immersive CGI with on-site investigations, the film offers a rare glimpse into a world frozen in time, providing viewers with an unprecedented look at the Roman Empire's prosperity and the sudden, silent end of an era.
