STARNO.net contributed specialized visual effects for a 30-second television campaign for Intact Insurance. The narrative follows a homeowner discovering a sudden water leak in her basement. As she contacts an Intact agent, the room undergoes a dramatic, surreal transformation: the walls and floors stretch immeasurably, creating an intense spatial distortion effect to metaphorically represent the overwhelming stress of a home disaster.
While the primary basement set was constructed in a studio, STARNO.net was tasked with the critical role of creating the exterior digital environments visible through the basement windows. This required a dual-phase production process. First, we developed hyper-realistic neighborhood landscapes for the standard shots. Second, we had to create distorted versions of these same environments to match the extreme perspective shifts occurring inside the room.
Our team utilized advanced Digital Matte Painting and 3D projection techniques to ensure that the lighting and parallax of the outside world remained perfectly synchronized with the chaotic movement of the interior walls. By blending photorealistic exterior plates with the studio footage, we helped ground the surreal visual metaphor in a tangible, believable reality.
The core of this project was the seamless integration of Digital Matte Paintings (DMP) within a moving, distorting frame. Achieving a convincing "stretched" look required our artists to understand the physics of camera lenses and the way light refracts through glass during a perspective shift.
