Greenland: Migration

GREENLAND: MIGRATION (GREENLAND 2)

WORK DESCRIPTION:

STARNO provided Digital Matte Painting and Environment Design for the highly anticipated sequel, Greenland: Migration, starring Gerard Butler. Following the catastrophic events of the first film, the sequel required a visceral and large-scale depiction of a world ravaged by comet fragments.

Our primary contribution focused on complex aerial sequences over the United Kingdom. Specifically, we crafted large-scale aerial destruction matte paintings of the London metropolitan area. These shots depict a post-apocalyptic landscape featuring massive meteorite impact craters, scorched earth, and iconic London structures in various states of ruin.

The technical challenge involved blending photorealistic textures of debris and destroyed architecture with intricate atmospheric effects to convey the immense scale of the disaster. Every building and crater was meticulously painted to ensure a seamless integration with the moving aerial plates, maintaining a high level of detail suitable for the big screen. This extensive visual effects work was proudly completed for the specialized VFX studio Alchemy 24.

STORYLINE:

In Greenland: Migration, the Garrity family is forced to leave the safety of the Greenland bunker after surviving the near-extinction event caused by the comet Clarke. They must embark on a perilous journey across the decimated and frozen wasteland of Europe to find a new home.

As they navigate through the ruins of civilization, they encounter new threats and must rely on their resilience and bond to survive in a world where the environment itself has become their greatest enemy. The film explores themes of survival, hope, and the human spirit's ability to endure in the face of total devastation.
