STARNO collaborated with Cinesite to bring the rich, historical world of Ubisoft’s ASSASSIN’S CREED to the big screen. Directed by Justin Kurzel, the film required an immense scale of world-building to recreate 15th-century Spain during the height of the Inquisition.
As a Freelance Matte Painter, Frédéric St-Arnaud worked on several high-profile sequences featuring the film's signature parkour action. The work involved creating expansive, panoramic Digital Matte Paintings of historical Spanish cities. These environments had to be meticulously detailed as the hero escapes across rooftops, providing the audience with soaring, unobstructed views of the city’s architecture, cathedrals, and the surrounding dusty regions.
The technical challenge was to maintain historical accuracy while providing the cinematic "Leap of Faith" scale the franchise is known for. This included the integration of 3D geometry with digital painting to ensure that lighting and perspective remained perfect during complex camera movements over the rooftops.
Through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender) experiences the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar de Nerha, in 15th-century Spain. Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day.
The film stars Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, bridging two different eras through stunning visual storytelling and high-octane stunts that pay homage to the original video game series.
