Frederic St-Arnaud

Frederic extensive artistic and visual effects experience, spanning 20 years. For the past 16 years, Frederic was working for VFX studios as well as freelancing under the name of STARNO focusing primarily on digital matte painting, concept art and art direction. After many years of successful freelancing and great reputation, STARNO got incorporated in November 2015 for business venture.

His film credits include over than 50 feature films such as The Amazing Spiderman, Sin City, Elysium, The Lone Ranger, Pacific Rim, Resident Evil, Terminator Salvation, Babel, Silent Hill, Sky captain and the world of tomorrow, Once upon a time in Mexico, Spy kids 2 & 3, The Golden Compass which won the best Visual Effects oscar at the 2008 Academy Awards.

As an experienced producer and executive producer Melanie, works across both film and television. She has worked extensively with commercial and public broadcasters over the course of her career, and effectively balances her role across creative development, financing and production.

Melanie’s career began in 1998 at Technicolor as an Editor Assistant on both local and international film projects, she then worked at Buzz Image and Groupe TVA as a project manager. She joined STARNO at the early stage, her wise business advises and clever production strategies helped the company to become more organized and successful.


Joseph has been involved in many aspects of visual effects production ranging from modeling, texturing, compositing, rendering to matte painting tasks.

Having studied at the Montreal division of UQAT (Université du Quebec au Temiscamingue), Joseph's combined artistic background and techinal skills for visual effects and game production, enables him to streamline the studio pipeline in order to fully support the production needs as well as facilitate the creative process for the artists.


As Production manager, Isabelle oversees all projects with focus on the deliveries expectation, milestones, coordination with artists and clients as well as hiring and sales.

Most of Isabelle’s 15-years career has been spent in the show business industry, as a producer, publisher and singer for musical bands. Looking to broaden her understanding of production, she jumped at the opportunity to join STARNO.

Matte paintings (Matte arts) are used to create “virtual sets” and “digital backlots”. They can be used to create entire new sets, or to extend portions of an existing set. Traditional matte painting is done optically, by painting on top of a piece of glass to be composited with the original footage. Nowadays, matte painting is done in computers with the use of a tablet as a drawing device. In a digital environment, matte paintings can also be done in a 3D environment, allowing for 3D camera movements. A concept art is a form of illustration where the main goal is to convey a visual representation of a design, idea, and/or mood for use in movies, video games, or comic books before it is put into the final product. Concept Art is the illustrated visualization of ideas. These illustrations became necessary for developed visual properties. Concept art is the preliminary visual statement made in entertainment production. Before characters, worlds, or items are created, images are made to show what these things should look like, often based on a writers description.

Key Art

The term Key Art is used to describe an artwork usually in the form of a one sheet (or the more widely used term ‘poster’) – used to advertise a film, stage production or tv series or a game. Once the Key Art is developed, it is applied to all the marketing & advertising material of that specific film, stage produciton or tv series – to create a single ‘visual look & feel’ for the audience to recognize (hopefully when booking tickets or purchasing home entertainment products). Studios often print several posters that vary in size and content for various domestic and international markets.
